Application to Self

Throughout this semester, we have read and discussed many different trait and behavior theories. I believe after each article we read, I discover more and more about how I view my style of leadership. At the same time, the more we discuss different theories, the more I start to disagree with some. We have discussed theories such as the Great Man Theory, which essentially states you are either born a leader or you are not. A personal favorite of mine is the difference between people and task-oriented leadership.

To start, I do not believe Great Man Theory is true. Why? Because I believe leadership is a product of your surrounding, leanings, and aspirations throughout life. I did not come into college with the goal to be a leader in a student organization, in the classroom, or in the industry I plan to spend the rest of my career in. Almost 4 years later, I have been inspired by some of the industries greatest, learned more about leadership than I could have ever imagined, and have assumed various different leadership roles over my college career. Becoming a leader is possible; it just takes a little time, patience, and drive to get you there.

I also view myself more on the people oriented than task oriented side of leadership, but still view tasks as important. People are the basis of our industry, both from the guest and employee point of view. Without the guests, we have no business being here. If we are unwilling to be there for our employees, develop them into future leaders, and teach them a few things along the way, our business will not succeed in the long run. By the theories standards, I am no “Care bear”, but I am also no “Champion.” I am the balance between the two that keeps the people happy along with achieving goals, completing tasks, and keeping our business going day after day.
